AUGUST 16th 2014

Location: Prospect Park, Parkside Entrance (NEG GRANBWA SITE)

NGC is planning the event Bwa Kay Iman, named after an important slave social gathering on August 14th of 1791 that led to the revolution in Haiti to celebrate this important time in Haiti’s history as a reminder of the rich culture and pride. Members of the growing Gran Bwa family have organized this cultural gathering in Prospect Park to mark this date every year since 1990. We celebrate Bwa Kayiman through fine arts, drumming, traditional Haitian Folklore dance and storytelling. WE are reaching out to everyone in community of all age groups and cultures. On this day we provide a series of hands-on workshops in the natural setting of Prospect Park, creating an opportunity for Haitians to reconnect with their culture and for the general community to learn about Haiti’s culture.

One learning experience is the Haitian drumming dancing workshops and storytelling that commemorates some of the heroes of Bwa Kay Iman like Boukman Dutty, Toussaint Louverture, and Jean Jacques Dessalines through reciting poetry, singing and other popular theater.

With the HELP of your donation Neg Gran Bwa Culture can cover providing the cultural enrichment workshops, supplies, and refreshments to be provided to the public.

NEG GRAN BWA CULTURE’S GOALS:

Neg Gran Bwa Culture seeks to achieve the goal of raising awareness about Bwa Kay Iman as our event as well as a history lesson. We want more people in the community to know about the different workshops that are available to them. Whether it is the Haitian community or others of a different culture and especially to the children, we want to reach more people. By expanding our project to more people, we can create a similar spirit of unity as the gathering of the slaves of the original Bwa Kay Iman. Through painting, dancing, drumming and storytelling we want to accomplish the outcome of everyone leaving with something that they’ve learned from this profoundly artistic event.

“The community captures the force of the trees that surrounds us; the air that we breathe and the glow of sun rays shine on us all, creating a spiritual harmony.  This is all through communal effort. We need your help to make this event CONTINUE and make it more POWERFUL then last year!”  –Deenps Bazile

THANK YOU! 🙂
